Hybrid Rocket
From 2016-2018, the YUAA Rocket team designed, constructed, and attempted to static-fire a hybrid-engine system. While originally intended to be entered into a competition by the end of the 2017, the Hybrid Rocket project of 2016-2017 underwent a change into a hybrid engine program ahead of 2018.
Few active aerospace vehicles utilize the solid-fuel motors that YUAA currently relies on for launching payload rockets. While popular amongst hobbyists for their simplicity and reliability, they have several drawbacks. Primarily, once ignited, they cannot be extinguished, which leads to a lack of control and severely limits the application of these motors.
By the end of the 2016-2017 school year, the project had successfully completed a ready-to-test motor via COTS parts and had a motor test stand that would be used for ground testing. In 2018, the team intended to have a test launch by April 2018, but was unable to do so due to timing constraints and logistical hurdles.
During the 2023-2024 school year, Project Liquid strives to finish what the hybrid team and others started years ago.
